Hi All Hope everyone is doing ok? I was wondering if anyone else ever has pulsing pains that seem to go from behind the ear down to the outer edge of the collarbone. I have this every so often (about 5 times, since last July), and it comes on very suddenly and lasts for a few days to a week. I unded up in hospital when it first happen as it was so painful, but because this was before my RA diagnosis they just said it was muscle spasms and sent me home. It doesn't really feel like my muscle because of how it seems to be a pulsing pain and sometime it causes a slight pain in my head on the same side when the pain pulses down my neck. I thought I'd see if anyone else experienced this before I talked to my doctor, as I don't want them to just dismiss it (again). Thanks Amy xXx

Hello Amy,
Yes I get this . I have the sharp pains behind my ear and the pain gives me sharp ear pain and neck pain.
I thought it was myu imagination so I would also be interested if this is connected. The tramadol do not
touch it.
Hope someone can enlighten us.

I wonder if it could be to do with your neck bones. I would mention it to the rheumatology nurse if you have one that you can phone. I think this is ultimately a question for the consultant rather than the GP. Please update us when you get more information. This sounds really unpleasant and I hope you feel better soon.

Hi Amy
I experienced this about 3 years ago. A very severe pain behind my left ear. It was so painful I ended up in A & E because NHS Direct thought it might be mastoiditis which is very serious. Fortunately it wasn't but I was diagnosed with (no rash) shingles. I didn't even know there was such a thing.

How strange, I also suffer from this. It lasts a few days and disappears for a month or two. It it a very unpleasant pain and really disconcerting. I would be fascinated to know if you get an answer. Jo

Yes I also get this. It is like raging toothache behind my ear into my neck. When I spoke to my Rheumy team they said yes it could be connected to the RA but nothing they could do.

I get this too, but so far not as painful as you describe. Sounds like its hitting several of us, so maybe it is connected, wonder how many more will have this too BARBARA

xXx hi amy wat your sayin could be me tellin someone else bout my self , i have this most of the time also this travels into my head cant move my head sometime cant look up or down would love to know wat it is , i always put it down to RA pain but if it is or not dont think anyone knows i only said to my husband if this carries on i am goin to go to a and e with it . please keep me up dated would like to know if your doctor give s u a answer to wat it could be . best wishes geraldineF XX

Hi Amy Something I have had on and off for yonks! As Jenni mentions, and in my case, it is the TMJ ( Temporomandibular Joint). Very common in RA patients. Not much you can do except keep taking the tablets (and talking less  ). Often a 'soft food' diet will help until the inflammation settles and using a wheat bag to calm the nerve pain. I had my jaw X-Rayed some years ago and there was evidence of arthritic changes on one side in particular. Sometimes the pain up the side of the face can come from the neck so worth getting it checked out. Much can be done in the early stages to strengthen the neck muscles using physio avoiding potential damage to the delicate structures in the future. Hope you get some relief soon. Lyn x

Hello again,
Well I saw my RA nurse today and explained that i get this pain down my right side neck/ ear
etc. She said she had not heard of anyone else mentioning it to her. Then I come on
here and read Jenni and Lynn posts. - mmm interesting.
